Lesson One

Pre spawn Bass

When you head out to your favorite fishing hole ask yourself a few questions on the way. What is the Date? What is the Month? What will the weather be like? Why? Because every day of the year is a new beginning for Largemouth Bass. They change their location as often as they eat and you had better be where they are come dinner time!

Each season they (the Bass) have a niche, so to speak, where they feel the most comfort.  This is why it is so important to know what the water temperature is. ( Click to see our Depth Finders and GPS systems) The more information you can compile, the more apt you will be at catching your quarry.

OK, lets say that you have made it to the lake . Your on the water and its a nice spring day out side and the temperature is 60 plus degrees and the water temperature is 54 degrees, now what? Well, think about the sun for a second. You know it rises in the east and sets in the west, right? So what part of the lake will see the most sun throughout the day? If it were my decision to make I would go North as far as I could go. Why? Because the water there will warm the fastest. So after a few minutes your in the creek that has the most northern exposure to the sun. Check the water temperature, Hmmm 58 degrees. Are you in the right place? Absolutely!

The next problem that you face is how to find the fish. What color is the water? Is it muddy? Mirky? Clean and green? All of these things determine what bait you will tie on your line. So lets say that the water is clear. The best bait to use, at this time of year, to find fish is a "stick" or "jerk" bait. Using this bait effectively requires a little finesse on your part. Usually quick jerks in mixed or irregular cadence will do the trick. When you locate fish using this technique and feel you have caught all that will hit your jerk bait. Then a good way to put a few more fish in the boat is by using a good spinner bait and a jig and pig combination. By using these three baits and being in the right spot you are going to have a good day on the water.

So remember to have a good depth finder, with a temperature read out and the right fishing baits on your fishing rods. This will make the difference if you go home empty handed or with bragging rights.
